How many times have you wondered why your check engine light suddenly comes on?  Well, for me, it happened a bunch of times in a brand new car, and I did my own research.  The research on my particular model said that they had an issue with some of their gas caps not sealing correctly, which in turn would, in fact, trigger the “check engine light”.  It is estimated that up to 95% of the time, the reason is a faulty gas cap, or it wasn’t put back on properly.
