How many times have you wondered why your check engine light suddenly comes on? Well, for me, it happened a bunch of times in a brand new car, and I did my own research. The research on my particular model said that they had an issue with some of their gas caps not sealing correctly, which in turn would, in fact, trigger the “check engine light”. It is estimated that up to 95% of the time, the reason is a faulty gas cap, or it wasn’t put back on properly.
So, the first time this happened to me, I rushed to a Mechanic, who told me that is was this and that, and so on, and so on! If I had a scanning tool or device like the “Autel MaxiLink ML619 CAN OBD2 Scanner Code Reader“, I would have known that I was literally being taken for a ride! The Mechanic then gave me an estimate of approximately $300-$400 (this was years back but it was in that price range).
I took the hand written sheet, denied the service, and took it to a friend of mine that had a scanning device that was very similar to the code reading device that I am focusing with this article; because I like to compare real-life scenarios to the product that I am helping people with their purchasing decisions.
Finally, he handed the device, and I plugged it into the port that was located underneath the dash above my gas pedal and brake pedal. All I had to do was press the code scan button, and it started it’s scan. When it was complete, it gave me a code; then I was able to locate that code, and it was exactly what my research had already told me! MY GAS CAP WASN’T ON CORRECTLY!!! I put my gas cap on correctly, performed another scan to be sure, and there was no other issues listed!
***The only thing that the Mechanic said was that I could manually turn off the check engine light with his device, or he said that it often turns itself off after a few days. Well, I was already there, pushed a few buttons, and my issue was fixed, and the check engine was off, and IT DID NOT COST ME A DIME!!!
If I did not know anyone with a scanner/code reading device, I likely would have paid several hundred dollars on my vehicle for absolutely NO reason at all! The worst-case scenario that I had, was buying a $20 gas cap.
After this experience I went out and bought a similar model to the model listed above; because I did not want to be in the position of being ripped off anymore! Owning a Code Reader/Scanner to read your vehicle’s computer error codes, allows me to know almost exactly what is wrong with my vehicle before I even decide which route I am going to take. A quick fix would likely be done by myself, but knowing if the problem is big, and could possible put myself, and/or my passengers in a dangerous position is VERY important!
I drive a very High-Tech Sports Car, and I also drive a pretty technical Sport Motorcycle, so it is very important to me that I know what the problem is before I take my vehicles in for repair work. Ever since I have owned this device, it has allowed me to perform necessary updates/upgrades to the firmware, so I can keep tracking and scanning the latest models of today’s vehicles, and this code can be shown to the Mechanic beforehand, so I do not find myself in the position of being taken advantage of again!
The “Autel MaxiLink ML619 CAN OBD2 Scanner Code Reader“ is reasonably priced, and it has a 5-Star Rating, and you can not get anything better than a 5-Star Rating!
